Part I: Chant Exploration: 30 min
We start with a chanting segment going through the notes and sounds of each chakra so that people are familiar with the technique that will be used in the dance portion.
Part II: Dance-Sound Journey: 49 min
1: Base Chakra – The Dance and Sound of Embodiment
For this dance, tune into the point right at the base of your spine that reaches into the ground and your rootedness to the earth and let what you sense there lead your movements. Take your inspiration from the natural movements found in the animal kingdom and in African and Indigenous dances. Make sure to include squats and bended knees to accentuate this point. The note is C and the vowel is UH as in “but”. This sound awakens, energizes and balances your root chakra the portal of your connectedness and grounding.
2: Sacral Chakra – The Dance and Sound of Creative Energy – 7 min
For this dance, tune into the point right below your navel and focus on hip movements to be the guiding principles. Think of Hula and Belly dance as examples to express your erotic, creative and expressive self. This sacral dance can be slow and sensual, or flirtatious and erotic, with fluid movements of the hips and belly. The note is D and the vowel is OO as in “boot”. This sound awakens, energizes and balances your sacral chakra – the seat of your life-force and creative energy.
3: Solar Plexus Chakra – The Dance and Sound of Power – 7 min
For this dance, tune into the power of your solar plexus chakra. The movements can be reminiscent of the warrior dances of the Maori or even of Flamenco. Use fast dynamic movements to ignite the fire in your belly, fuelling your dance with energy and strength. You can also rein in all this fiery energy and allow your movements themselves to become stronger and stronger as you become charged with your intention and power. The note is E and the vowel is O as in “boat”. This sound awakens, energizes and balances your solar plexus chakra – the seat of your power in how you move in the world.
4: Heart Chakra – The Dance and Sound of Love – 7 min
For this dance, tune into your heart chakra and allow your emotions to lead the way. Use exaggerated arm movements to gently whirl into deep states of joyful harmony. Use the flow of your limbs and body to express the union of heaven and earth. Draw inspiration from your loves – past and current – to express your emotional world. This can include sorrow and may bring healing to old wounds. As you feel more and more uplifted, light and free, move your dance towards love, compassion and joy. The note is F and the vowel is AH as in “bat”. This sound awakens, energizes and balances your heart chakra – the seat of your feelings and emotional intelligence.
5: Throat Chakra – The Dance and Sound of Truth – 7 min
For this dance, tune into your throat chakra and pay special attention to the sound emanating from it. Allow this to guide your movements. Letting your throat lead the way, allow your body to follow and then move into full improvisation based on the sound energy of your throat and your expression. The note is G and the vowel is EH as in “bet”. This sound awakens, energizes and balances your throat chakra – the seat of your expression.
6: Third Eye Chakra – The Dance and Sound of Inner Vision – 7 min
For this dance, tune into your third eye chakra. You can choose any movement you like, but make sure you imagine yourself dancing in a dream, ecstatic setting that can lead to an altered state of consciousness. You can be dancing above the clouds, or in the heart of a flower, or between the stars. Anything goes! Movements can be simple, repetitive, and even monotonous as you open to the dance of the intuitive mind. Feel free to drift into your own visual universe of images, colours, and insights, as you achieve a deeply meditative state. The note is A and the vowel is I as in “bite”. This sound awakens, energizes and balances your throat chakra – the seat of your inner sight and intuition.
7: Crown Chakra – The Dance and Sound of the Soul – 7 min
For this dance, tune into the point at the very top of your head, your crown chakra – your connection to the Godhead – and let it flow! Feel into the vastness of your soul and feel its connection with your body. Allow for micro-movements in the body to echo and amplify as they reverberate throughout your being. This dance is an invitation to open the gateway to the soul through the use of meditative sacred dance. The dance of the crown chakra is the most paradoxical for the observer as the micro-movements can be very minimal. The dance is internal – for now it is the soul’s turn to dance. The note is B and the vowel is EE as in “beet”. This sound awakens, energizes and balances your throat chakra – the portal to your Higher Self and its connection to the Divine.
Integration – 10 min
We end the workshop with a free flowing dance to the Gayatri Mantra Shuffle by Adham Shaikh and Tera Tara. You are encouraged to chant along if you wish or simply Om along as you allow your body to move as it wills. Pay special attention to the energy as it circulates from chakra to chakra.
We then sing OM a few times and allow ourselves to sit in silence for a while.
