Contemporary dance is a powerful art form with so much to offer the human body through expression and physical skill. Contemporary floor work will teach you how to change levels efficiently, interact with the ground safely, how to turn, jump, and fly, we inspire to have fun and be creative.
Kyra Newton is a dance artist based in Calgary, AB. She obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Contemporary Dance and Sociology from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, BC. Kyra is grateful for the opportunity to have worked with dance artists such as Wen Wei, Judith Garay, Crystal Pite, and Desiree Dunbar as a dance performer. After her studies, her love for dance and movement lead her to travel and learn from the creative artists in the company Thodos Dance Chicago, Hofesh Shechter, Yin Yue, and Shen Wei Dance Arts. As an independent artist she has worked for Con8 Dance Collective, La Caravan Dance Theatre, Corps Bara Dance Theatre, and for independent dance artists in Calgary and Vancouver. As a choreographer she has presented work at the W&M Dance Project show Framed, the Ignite! Festival of Emerging Artists 2017, for local festivals, and public events, and recently co-choreographed and performed Intrinsic, a 50-minute contemporary dance piece as a part of Theatre Junction’s Next Stage program. She is inspired by conscious dance and meditative breath practices, which she feels offer continuous body wisdom and connection to a deeper part of self. Kyra is currently working towards her certification in Inner Journeys and can’t wait to dive deep into ecstatic dance with her community. As a dance teacher Kyra has taught for 7 years in Vancouver and Calgary. She has taught at community centres, dance studios, and for non-profits in Calgary and Kathmandu, Nepal. Kyra is inspired by the continuous opportunities to share the dance with others and inspire their individual embodiment.
